Root canal therapy, or endodontics, is almost always performed under Rubber Dam for safety and in order achieve the best and most predictable results.
When the nerve in a tooth dies within the root canal of a tooth the canal can be cleaned, then gutta percha can then be inserted to seal the canal preventing further infection. A crown may be necessary later.
Root treatments on back teeth can be more complicated because they have a number of roots. The root canals are exposed and all roots then need to be excavated making sure that the entire tooth nerve is removed.
The cavity is then filled with gutta percha and the tooth then filled.
